We aim at reducing our carbon footprint by taking into account the economic, environmental and social impacts caused by us because of the R&D activities, carried out based on the efficiency, creativity and sustainability policies, as well as at developing sustainable manufacturing technologies and manufacturing environment-friendly products.

The main mission of R&D activities is to increase scientific literacy by raising the scientific, innovative and technological awareness, and to provide added value for the industry and country through exchange of information and technological innovations generated and introduction of this experience and background information in the manufacturing processes. Technical and academic equipment are enhanced in cooperation with the organizations such as TUBITAK, USAM, TCMB, and department of chemistry and department of material and geology engineering of the universities, as well as customers and suppliers.

Efficient use of natural resources in the cement industry, where energy and raw material are highly used, is of great importance for use of sustainable resources. Accordingly, R&D activities are maintained for replacement of non-renewable primary fuels and natural raw materials with their alternatives.

The patent for "Waste Incineration System Integrated to Rotary Kiln", which has been installed by Bolu Cement in 2007 for disposal of hazardous industrial wastes, is a first in the cement industry in Turkey.

OYAK Cement, aiming at satisfaction of customer expectations at the highest level and enrichment of nature and people through its activities, is the leader of its industry with its R&D activities themed with the industrial symbiosis. As a consequence, many process by-products and wastes have been utilized as alternative raw materials during the cement manufacturing process; and reduction of use of primary resources and elimination of adverse environmental impacts of such wastes have been ensured accordingly. Similarly, performance cements, namely POWERCEM, CEMENTUM, STARCEM and POWERCIM, have been developed as alternatives to the cement CEM I 42,5 R type preferred by ready-mixed concrete users due to high early strength. The carbon footprint of performance cements is 10-25% less than the carbon footprint of the cements CEM I type due to strength and workability of the performance cements and manufacturing process carried out by using natural resources and fossil fuels at lower level.

As a results of efforts made for many years, the special-type cement of Marmaray tube tunnel, which is qualified as the project of the century, was produced by Bolu Cement, and the C 40 concrete with a service life of 100 years, called as A-PC, used by OYAK Concrete in the underwater tube. The cement used is a type having low alkali level and durability under water; it is specially developed in line with the requirements of this special project.

As a results of efforts made for many years, the special-type cement of Marmaray tube tunnel, which is qualified as the project of the century, OYAK Concrete place particular importance to the R&D studies and has been developed different types and purposes concretes. DURABET® and SKYBET® products can be given as an example for development studies. DURABET® series concrete products designed for service lives of 100 years or more which resistant to the severe exposure conditions without any maintenance of structures . SKYBET® is high-strength concretes classified between C50/60 – C100/115 and higher, easily pumpable over long distances both vertically and horizontally for multi-storey office and residence buildings.

A method has been developed for enabling the photocatalytic cements, started to be used in Europe, to be manufactured with a cost advantage of 40%, with the efforts of R&D team of Adana Cement. Photocatalytic cements, which clean themselves and the air after becoming active under sunlight or ultraviolet light, clean pollution accumulated on the construction, and also make NOx components, caused by vehicle traffic, harmless.

As a result of Bolu Cement R & D activities, manufacturing of G-Class HSR Type Well Cement with perfect workability and mechanical properties, which is used in side filling of the oil boreholes and provides resistance suitable to drilling procedures even under high temperature and pressure conditions, without setting, up to 6000 meters deep, is accomplished.
