OYAK Cement believes that a peaceful and comfortable future is possible upon ensuring the economic, social and environmental sustainability.

The quality of life, the level of welfare, economic competitiveness, and continuity of employment and ecosystem depends on the “common natural capital”.

All plants of OYAK Cement have obtained its environmental permits and licenses from the Ministry of Environment and Urban Planning in full compliance with the statutory Environmental Regulations. Dust and gas emission of main flues of the rotary kiln are monitored by the Ministry of Environment and Urban Planning on online basis.

In addition to all cement plants, OYAK Concrete and OYKA have Environmental Management System certificate under the scope of TS-EN-ISO 14001 and Adana Cement is the first cement plant with its environmental management system established and certified.

It allocates substantial amounts of fund for environmental investments at its plants every year. Some of the main investments include bag filter investments and other dedusting projects, closed clinker stokeholes, NOx emission reduction systems, more efficiently firing systems, continuous emission measurement and monitoring systems, waste water treatment systems, alternative fuel waste pretreatment and supply systems, waste laboratory, manufacturing optimization systems (Expert Optimiser).

OYAK Cement pays utmost attention to keep up with the technological developments and to use the best techniques available during the process of design and implementation of its new investments as well as to prefer the safest systems in terms of occupational health and safety, which prevent pollution before it occurs, and which results in pollution at minimum level, and which reduce pollution at source.

It carries out environmental management systems, clean production practices, energy efficiency projects, use of alternative energy sources, and the activities for reduction of greenhouse gas emission caused by types, products and processes of the use of low-clinker blended cement, which is developed through the alternative raw materials as a consequence of R&D activities.

OYAK Cement, increases use of blended cement, and plays a leading role in the plant regions in order for reduction of carbon footprint, and also develops the products with less carbon footprint in cooperation with the universities, and invests in renewable energy sources.

It ensures that natural balance is re-established upon completion of the rehabilitation of the manufacturing areas, reserves of which are depleted, based on the Rehabilitation Projects and Reintegration Nature Plans, which are drawn up for raw material quarries (mine sites).

Plantation efforts are uninterruptedly being carried out on areas where plants of OYAK Cement Group are located. Accordingly, 422.475 trees were planted in total in recent years, including 230.875 by Bolu Cement, 65.589 by Mardin Cement, 63.431 by Adana Cement, 39.610 by Aslan Cement, 15.970 by Unye Cement and 7.000 by OYKA.

A private company named ENAT (Endustriyel Agac Tarimi) A.S. was established in 2005, which broke new grounds in terms of industrial afforestation in Turkey and the number of whose partners has increased up to 31.

OYKA is one of the founding partners of ENAT A.S. which was established under the leadership of TEMA. Ascertaining its basic field of interest as fast growing species, ENAT has planted 3 million trees on a land of 1500 h, in total, in the district of Karacabey in Bursa, in the villages of Kedikaya and Dagesemen, as well as in the district of Ezine in Canakkale, and in Kizilkoy and Gokceada. The ultimate goal of the project is to plant 6 million saplings on a land of 4 thousands hectare by the end of 2028.

Alternative Fuel and Raw Material Policy of OYAK Cement

OYAK Cement aims at using alternative fuels and raw materials at the highest level within the bounds of the regional conditions, under which the plants are available, for effective and efficient use of natural resources and maintaining this use in compliance with the environmental and administrative regulations.

Being aware of its responsibilities for the environment and society, OYAK Cement makes long-term plans to use wastes from other industrial plants as alternative fuels and raw materials, to become a solution partner in energy and material recovery, and to carry out industrial symbiosis works which will yield mutual advantage. Additionally, it aims at increasing and maintaining the activities of many years, it has carried out for use of municipal wastes, managed by the municipalities, and also contributing to disposal of wastes in cooperation with the local authorities.

Accordingly, it also aims at decreasing use of fossil fuels and natural raw materials, and increasing use of alternative fuels and alternative raw materials on annual basis.

During conduct of these works;

By recovering the heating values for the organic parts of the wastes, which are considered as alternative fuels;

  • Consumption of primary fossil resources such as petroleum coke and lignite, which are used as fuels, is decreased, and greenhouse gas emission is economized.
    By recovering the material values for the mineral parts of the wastes, which are considered as alternative raw materials;
  • Consumption of natural raw material resources such as limestone, marn, clay, bauxite, iron ore, which are used for cement manufacturing, is decreased.
